Undergraduate Coordinator Kaley McCarty – Next Steps
Kaley McCarty has been the OCIAS (Oregon Consortium of International and Area Studies) Undergraduate Coordinator since November 2016. As a fourth-generation Duck, she has enjoyed being able to use her time, skills, and energy to support students and faculty at her alma mater (she graduated from University of Oregon with a BA in Environmental Studies in Spring 2016). In this position, she has worked with International Studies as well as all of the area studies programs, and has “met so many wonderful people” along the way.
“It was a nice surprise when I started my position that I would be working closely with faculty I already knew – both from my time as a student at UO and from working at a local summer camp called Imagine That! the last few years,” Kaley notes. “It has been rewarding to help students navigate their undergraduate experience and to support the important work of faculty and of the department.”
Although Kaley has immensely enjoyed her time in this position, she will be leaving OCIAS at the end of June to pursue her next steps – joining the Peace Corps! She was extended an invitation to serve as a Secondary Education English Teacher in Madagascar this past December, and is set to leave the country this summer. Between now and her departure, Kaley plans to spend as much of her remaining free time as she can with friends and family (including her Goldendoodle, Prudence), relaxing, reading, writing, traveling, hiking, and generally enjoying the beautiful Oregon spring and summer weather.
The 1975 VW Camper that brought Kaley to Oregon and on many adventures. (She sold it, but wishes she hadn’t, even if it was pricey to keep that engine running!)
