INTL Lunch Talk Jan 31 – The Edifice Complex with Phil Scher

The Edifice Complex: Historic Preservation, Museums and the Challenge of Ontological Security in Barbados

January 31, 2020
12 – 1 p.m.
PLC 348

This talk asks the question:  how do we understand the relationship of a community to any aspect of its immediate environment and at what point does this become, specifically, a relationship of identity/heritage and not simply an awareness of one’s physical surroundings? What cultural categories of heritage must be in place to frame that awareness in recognizable ways? This talk is taken from a work-in-progress chapter that draws upon fieldwork in the Caribbean nation of Barbados and mobilizes the theory of “ontological security” to understand how local populations think about and act upon built environments that are designated as having “historical” importance.
