INTL Departmental Commencement Ceremony, Spring 2014
It was wet but certainly memorable!
Nearly 150 undergraduate and graduate students braved the elements to receive their diplomas on Monday, June 16th as their friends and families looked on. Professor Stephen Wooten stepped in to emcee the ceremony, while IS professors Kathie Carpenter, Derrick Hindery, Angela Joya, and Kristin Yarris hooded the grads, and handed diploma covers to undergrads.
Musicians from the local Javanese Gamelan Siri Pandhawa provided ambient music, as well as a featured piece “Lagu Penghijauan” by K.R.T. Wasitodiningrat during the ceremony. Graduate Student Samantha Gammons and Undergraduate Gian Luca Gamberini both gave memorable speeches recounting memories of their experience and expressing as sense of optimism and excitement for the future. Our featured alumni commencement speaker, Liesl Messerschmidt (BA, 1996), gave a wonderful and inspiring speech, in addition.
Unfortunately, what started out as a promising day in terms of weather, the sunshine turned quickly to Oregon rain showers during the speeches.
Graduates (and guests) persevered under umbrellas, plastic ponchos and programs, and quickly accepted their degrees before seeking shelter from the downpour. The remaining guests and grads enjoyed a reprieve from the rain and were treated to a variety of international snacks and celebratory cake at a reception following.
